|RHistory:|N Under Tibetan rule from the 16th century.
In 1774 Bhutan made an agreement with the British East Indian Company that gave some revenues. During violations in the 19th century British troops periodically occupied the area.
Monarchy since 1907, Bhutan became a British protectorate by e treaty 1910. This treaty was transformed to India in 1949 at the Indian independence. Bhutan and India also form a monetary union.
Constitutional monarchy since 1969. Member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
